Speaker Johnson admits there are no votes in Congress to support Trump’s duties
After the 150 days set by law for the unilateral imposition of tariffs by the US president, Congress will not be able to support a key aspect of Donald Trump’s economic policy.
According to Politico, House Speaker Mike Johnson said bluntly that a decision to support the tariffs in Congress does not seem possible at this time. This statement is supported by the fact that a majority of 60 votes will be needed in the Senate for a positive vote.
At the same time, Johnson rejected the idea voiced by Democrats about the obligation of the Trump administration to compensate importers for tariffs that were declared illegal by the Supreme Court. The speaker called for “giving the White House time to figure everything out, because these are unprecedented events for which there is no textbook.”
- After Trump’s tariffs were effectively canceled by the Supreme Court, the US president imposed new tariffs on the whole world at first 10% and later 15%.
- Trump used a special procedure to do this, which gives the president special economic powers for only 150 days, after which the tariffs can remain in effect only by decision of Congress.
