Soybean Harvesting in Parana Remains Slow due to Wet Weather
The soybeans in Parana were 2% harvested earlier this week compared to 15% last year according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). This represented an advance of 1% for the week. The start of the harvest has been slow due to delayed planting last fall and recent wet weather. Deral estimates that the soybeans are 3% in vegetative development, 11% flowering, 54% filling pods, 27% maturing, and 2% harvested. The soybeans are rated 4% poor, 15% average, and 81% good. Parana is the second largest soybean producing state in Brazil after Mato Grosso.
Harvesting is expected to accelerate as the rainfall becomes lighter and more soybeans reach harvest maturity.
As the soybeans get harvested, farmers in Parana are starting to plant their safrinha corn. Deral estimates that 4% of the safrinha corn has been planted compared to 19% last year. This represents an advance of 1% for the week. If it gets too late to plant safrinha corn, some farmers have indicated they may opt to plant grain sorghum or winter wheat.
Farmers in Parana are also starting to harvest their first corn crop which is now 4% harvested. The first corn crop in Parana is 3% in vegetative development, 8% pollinating, 54% filling grain, 35% mature, and 4% harvested. Last year at this time, the corn was 19% harvested. The first corn crop is rated 2% poor, 16% average, and 82% good.
