South Asia will depend on corn imports this year

South Asia is expected to see a significant increase in corn imports, driven by poultry demand and expanding ethanol production. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s May World Markets and Trade report projects the region’s corn imports to increase by 15% in the 2025/26 season, bringing the total annual volume to 3.1 mln tonnes.
India will be the largest importer of corn, with purchases estimated at 850,000 tonnes in 2025/26. India, previously a net exporter of corn, has increased imports significantly from 500,000 tonnes in 2024/25, according to the USDA. The main factors driving the increase in imports are increasing demand for animal feed and government ethanol policies, which are leading to consumption exceeding domestic production.
