South Africa’s corn production could reach a record 17.69 mln tons in 2026
South Africa’s corn production could reach a record 17.69 mln tons in 2026, up 6.25% from the previous season. This was reported an updated forecast from the country’s Crop Estimates Committee (CEC). South Africa harvested 16.65 mln tons of corn in 2025.
In its October report, the CEC raised its corn production forecast from the previous estimate of 17.52 mln tons released on September 29. The expected harvest was therefore revised upward by another 170 thsd tons. If confirmed, the crop would be the largest in the country’s history.
White corn is expected to account for the largest share of production, with output estimated at 9.78 mln tons. It is primarily used for human consumption. Yellow corn production, which is mainly used in animal feed, is forecast at 7.91 mln tons.
Meanwhile, the outlook for the upcoming 2026/27 season remains uncertain due to drought risks associated with El Niño and high production costs. According to farmers’ preliminary planting intentions, the total area planted to summer grains and oilseeds could decline by 2% to 4.5 mln ha. Corn is expected to see the largest reduction in planted area, potentially affecting production next year.
