Slovakia becomes first EU country to plan implementation of Ukraine’s eQueue system on its side of the border

Ukraine and Slovakia have signed a Letter of Intent to implement Ukraine’s electronic border queue management system, eQueue, on the Slovak side of their shared border. Slovakia has become the first European Union country to formally agree with Ukraine on plans to extend the system beyond Ukrainian territory. Joint management of traffic flows is expected to make border crossings more predictable for carriers and reduce physical queues at checkpoints.

The document was signed by Ukraine’s First Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development Serhiy Derkach and State Secretary at the Office of Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alena Sabelová. The agreements provide for the integration of electronic queue management systems, the exchange of experience in digitalizing border procedures and joint efforts to increase border checkpoint capacity. The two sides will also focus on modernizing border infrastructure and securing funding for joint projects.

Implementing eQueue on the Slovak side is expected to improve coordination of freight and passenger traffic across the border. For Ukrainian transport operators, particularly companies involved in agricultural exports, this could mean shorter waiting times and more efficient planning of international shipments. Reduced border delays would also support more stable logistics routes between Ukraine and EU countries.

The next stage of cooperation will involve assessing the technical feasibility of implementing the Ukrainian system in Slovakia. The two countries then plan to prepare a separate intergovernmental agreement defining the practical mechanisms for implementing the project. Specific dates for launching eQueue on the Slovak side of the border have not yet been announced.

Ukraine’s eQueue system was first launched in December 2022 at the Yahodyn–Dorohusk freight border crossing with Poland. It was subsequently expanded to other routes and now operates at all border checkpoints serving trucks and buses. In 2026, Ukraine also began testing a new mechanism for prioritizing freight vehicles at border crossings, while an automatic verification feature for international Green Card insurance certificates was added to the system.
