Satellite imagery reveals extensive damage to EFKO terminal at Russia’s Port of Taman

New satellite imagery of the EFKO liquid bulk terminal at Russia’s Port of Taman suggests that the damage caused by the Ukrainian drone strike on July 30 was far more extensive than initially reported. The images show damage to storage tanks, terminal infrastructure and large burn scars, casting doubt on earlier assessments that described the impact as minor.

Immediately after the attack, Reuters, citing industry sources, reported that the terminal had sustained only limited damage and would be able to resume operations quickly. At the time, however, EFKO declined to comment on the extent of the damage, while Russian authorities provided no official assessment of the facility’s condition.

EFKO later confirmed that the terminal had suspended operations to assess the damage and carry out repair work. The facility is Russia’s largest specialized deep-water terminal for handling liquid food cargoes and the country’s only dedicated export terminal for crude vegetable oils. Its designed capacity exceeds 3 million tons per year, although its actual throughput has recently been around 1.5 million tons of vegetable and tropical oils, molasses and sunflower meal annually.

The EFKO terminal plays a key role in Russia’s sunflower oil exports through the Azov-Black Sea basin. The newly released satellite imagery indicates that restoring the terminal to full operation may take considerably longer than initially expected. This reinforces concerns that Russian sunflower oil exports could decline by about 40% year-on-year in August, as damage to port infrastructure continues to disrupt export logistics.
