Rumours emerge about possible Russian shipping restrictions in the Sea of Azov
Unconfirmed reports are circulating in the global grain market that Russia may temporarily restrict shipping through the Kerch Strait, the Sea of Azov and the Volga-Don Canal due to the security situation. There has been no official confirmation of these reports so far, but the rumours alone have already increased concerns among market participants. About 10 mln tons of Russia’s roughly 45 mln tons of annual grain exports are shipped through the Azov basin, meaning that even short-term restrictions could disrupt operations at Azov ports and slow export shipments.
At the same time, analysts note that even if the reports are confirmed, the greatest impact would likely be on the ports of Kavkaz and Taman, which depend on transit through the Kerch Strait. As long as Russia’s deep-water Black Sea ports continue operating normally, the overall impact on the global grain market is expected to remain limited.
