Romania’s sunflower seed market is entering the final stage of harvesting with a noticeably stronger supply outlook than previously expected. The larger crop is increasing seasonal pressure on domestic prices while improving export opportunities across the Black Sea-Danube region. Market estimates now place Romanian sunseed production at around 2.45 M mt, reinforcing the country’s role as an important supplier to regional crushers.

At the same time, the demand structure is shifting. Turkey has already become the main destination for Romanian shipments early in the season, while the earlier reduction of the import duty from 20% to 12% could stimulate additional buying in October. This gives Turkish crushers an opportunity to secure raw material during the period when harvest pressure on regional prices is at its strongest.

Romania’s production trend points to a recovery from weaker previous seasons, with current crop expectations moving above recent average levels. However, yield performance remains uneven across producing regions, so UkrAgroConsult expects the overall supply picture to become more reliable once more detailed regional data are available in October.

Romania’s export profile is also becoming more front-loaded, with Constanta shipments concentrated on Turkey and Southern Europe while further acceleration will depend on crusher demand. Domestic CPT prices rose earlier in the season and then moved lower, confirming that new-crop availability is beginning to weigh on the market and improve the competitiveness of Romanian sunseed in export channels.

This creates a short but commercially important window for the regional market: a larger Romanian crop, active harvesting and a lower Turkish tariff support stronger export economics, although higher freight, competition from EU crushers and a possible recovery in Romanian prices could limit the advantage. UkrAgroConsult sees the combination of seasonal price pressure and stronger Turkish demand as one of the key drivers of the Black Sea sunseed market at the start of the new season.

Key trends

  • Romania’s larger sunflower seed crop is increasing seasonal price pressure while expanding the country’s export potential across the Black Sea-Danube region.
  • Turkey is becoming an increasingly important buyer of Romanian sunseed, and the earlier import-duty reduction supports purchases during the most favorable part of the harvest pricing cycle.
  • Current production forecasts are well above the weaker previous seasons, although uneven regional yields still leave room for further adjustments to the final crop estimate.
  • Constanta exports are highly concentrated on Turkey and Southern Europe at the start of the season, making demand from these destinations central to the next stage of price formation.
  • Romania’s competitive export advantage could be partly offset by higher freight costs, stronger competition from EU crushers and a potential recovery in domestic prices once peak harvest pressure fades.
