Romania proposes permanent Danube dredging to support navigation and port logistics
Romania has proposed creating a national strategic project for permanent dredging of the Danube. The initiative is intended to maintain sufficient depths for navigation and support the stable operation of port logistics.
Participants in a discussion on the future of the Port of Constanța said the Danube should be used more actively as a transit route between Central European countries and the port. This would require ensuring year-round navigability through systematic dredging works.
According to participants, the project could also help secure water supplies for cooling reactors at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. Dredging is therefore being considered not only as a logistics measure, but also as a broader infrastructure and energy project.
Port operators also highlighted other challenges affecting Constanța’s competitiveness, including the lack of a long-term development strategy, port tariff policy, weak transport connectivity and difficulties in attracting new cargo flows.
Following the discussion, the Constanța Port Business Association plans to prepare a package of legislative and operational proposals for parliament and other state authorities. The business community is also calling for more investment in port infrastructure and better coordination between public spending and existing private capacity.
