Romania changes road toll system for trucks

Romania will introduce a new electronic road toll system, TollRo, from October 1, 2026, for freight vehicles with a maximum authorized weight of more than 3.5 tons. Under the new model, charges will be based on the actual use of road infrastructure.

The toll will depend on the distance travelled, vehicle category and environmental characteristics. As a result, costs for international hauliers will increasingly depend on the specific route and type of truck.

For Ukrainian and other international transport companies that regularly use Romanian roads, the new system could affect transportation costs. This is particularly relevant for transit routes through Romania that are widely used to deliver agricultural products to ports and EU countries.

Payments will be administered through Romania’s STRR electronic road toll system operating via the national SETRE platform. Transport companies will need to take the new charging model into account when calculating freight rates and logistics costs after October 1.

The next stage will be the integration of the Romanian system with similar systems in other EU countries. Compatibility through the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) is expected to become operational from January 15, 2027.
