Role of Black Sea grains in Mediterranean markets

Mediterranean countries are the world’s major grain consumers due to high consumption amid growing population. For many countries in the region, Russian and Ukrainian grains play the key role in in ensuring food security.

Wheat. In the previous two seasons, Russia and Ukraine have annually supplied a combined some 25 MMT of wheat to Mediterranean countries. At the same time, they accounted for the lion’s share of imports in their traditional export markets such as Egypt and Turkey. Similar to the previous few seasons, the biggest wheat supplier was Russia, while Ukraine was rather aimed at exporting wheat to Southeast Asian countries.

At the same time, a poor crop in the EU allowed Black Sea countries to increase their presence in the markets of Morocco and Algeria, UkrAgroConsult reports.

MY 2020/21 featured the imposition of an export duty on major grains in Russia.

Stronger wheat demand is expected from Mediterranean countries in the new marketing year 2021/22. The Black Sea region will be able to meet the growing needs, but the supply pattern will somewhat change. At the same time, Black Sea countries will have to compete not only with each other but also with EU countries, whose export potential has increased from last season.
