Rice prices in Japan have risen to the highest level since 1975
Rice prices in August jumped 28.3 percent in Japan from the same month a year ago to the highest level since September 1975. That was due to a poor harvest last year linked to excessive heat, the country’s Ministry of Administrative Affairs and Communications said.
Prices have also risen due to the desire of some people to increase their household stockpiles in case of natural disasters, the ministry said. Rice remains a staple of the country’s daily diet, despite a major expansion in bread consumption.
Overall, food prices rose by 2.9% in Japan in August. This is attributed to the rise in the price of imported agricultural goods, as well as the impact of excessive summer heat.
