Record winter crop expected in Australia
Wheat and barley production in Australia will reach a new record this season. This was achieved by increasing the area under winter crops. In general, the production of winter cereals in Australia in the 2024/25 season is expected to increase by 16% to 55.1 million tons. About it writes agrarheute.com.
A favorable start to the winter planting season, above-average winter rainfall and high soil moisture in most planted areas contributed to above-average yields in Australia’s two main cereal states, New South Wales and Queensland. Harvest prospects in Western Australia have also improved significantly following timely winter rains. Total winter cereal production is expected to reach the third highest level ever recorded.
Australian agriculture agency ABARES in its current report forecasts a wheat harvest of 31.89 million tons, up 5 million tons from the previous year. The barley harvest is estimated at 11.665 million tons, 865,000 tons more than the previous year.
ABARES estimates that the area planted to all winter crops in 2024/25 increased by 7% to 24.6 million hectares.
At the same time, Australia’s spring cereal crop in 2024/25 is expected to be down 7% on last season to 4.4 million tons. Nevertheless, this result will remain 20% above the 10-year average.
