China has set a new historical record for grain production under its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), surpassing 700 million tonnes in 2024. This milestone was announced by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Han Jun during a press conference in Beijing on September 16, 2025. The output marks an increase of 37 million tonnes compared to 2020, reinforcing the country’s commitment to food security for its 1.4 billion population.

The surge in grain production was driven by significant investments in agricultural infrastructure modernization. China has developed over 1 billion mu (approximately 66.7 million hectares) of high-standard farmland, enhancing land use efficiency. Technological advancements have also been pivotal, with innovations contributing 63.2% to the overall harvest through modern cultivation methods, automation, and improved crop varieties.

Farmers’ incomes in rural areas have seen steady growth, with the per capita disposable income reaching 23,119 yuan (approximately 3,255 USD) in 2024. This progress reflects improved economic conditions for agricultural workers, supported by government initiatives aimed at enhancing rural livelihoods and attracting younger generations to farming.

To support the success of the Five-Year Plan, China has heavily invested in agricultural research. Over 800 research institutions and 120,000 researchers are working on developing new technologies, including climate-resilient crop varieties that help mitigate the impact of extreme weather conditions and boost yields.

The outlook for 2025 remains optimistic, with projections estimating grain production could reach 709 million tonnes, driven by further technological advancements and increased per-hectare productivity. Han Jun emphasized that food security remains a top priority, and China will continue to develop its agricultural sector to ensure a stable grain supply for its population.
