Rapeseed continues to be sown in Ukraine despite the expiration of the permissible deadlines

Agricultural producers in the Odesa region have sown about 67% of the planned areas with winter wheat and barley, and are also continuing to sow rapeseed.

This is evidenced by data from the Institute of Climate-Oriented Agriculture, as reported in the Analytical Report on Agrometeorological Conditions and the State of Crop Crops in Ukraine as of November 7.

It is noted that from October 31 to November 6, the weather in the region was warm, and on some days it was humid. The maximum air temperature was +19ºС, the minimum dropped to +6-9ºС. 7 mm of precipitation fell, which is 70% of the ten-day norm. Due to the precipitation, moisture reserves in the arable layer of soil were replenished, which is very important for seed germination, emergence and initial growth of winter crops.

“Weather conditions in the region contributed to the sowing of winter crops. For winter wheat, late sowing dates have expired, and for barley, especially two-seed varieties, they are still permissible, especially for the southern regions of the region,” experts note.

In winter wheat, which was sown in the third decade of September, tillering is observed, and in later terms — from grain germination to the appearance of 1-3 leaves. The condition of the crops is mostly good and satisfactory.

“Despite the fact that all permissible sowing dates for winter rapeseed have expired, farms continue to sow it in the hope of favorable wintering conditions. Over the past week, the sowing area has increased by almost 11 thousand hectares. 87% of the forecast has already been sown,” experts add.

In those fields where rapeseed was sown in August and early September in moist soil, seedlings of varying densities were obtained and are currently in the stage of forming 4-10 true leaves and rosettes of lateral shoots.
