Rains may improve winter crop conditions in the US, Europe and Black Sea region
Weather conditions may improve in several key winter crop regions across the Northern Hemisphere in the coming weeks. Rain is expected in Western Europe, the US Great Plains and the Black Sea region, where prolonged dryness has reduced soil moisture reserves.
In the US, a shift in atmospheric circulation is expected to bring more frequent rainfall to the central and southern Plains. This could improve conditions for winter wheat planting and emergence after a prolonged period of heat and drought.
In Europe, rainfall is expected across France, the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Conditions are also forecast to improve in the Danube Basin, where parts of Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia and Romania have received less than half of normal rainfall in recent months.
Dryness is also beginning to ease in the Black Sea region. Some rainfall has already reached Ukraine, while more precipitation is expected across other parts of the region in the coming weeks, although additional rain will still be needed to fully restore soil moisture.
By the time wheat, barley, rye and rapeseed enter winter dormancy, soil moisture conditions in the US, Western and Southeastern Europe and parts of the Black Sea region could improve significantly. India, however, remains a key risk area due to the likelihood of limited autumn and winter rainfall under El Niño conditions.
