The main pulse crop in Black Sea countries is peas, with the second position on the list held by kidney beans in Ukrainian pulse production and by chickpeas in Russia.

Ukrainian kidney beans. Ukraine produced 75 KMT of kidney beans in 2020, or 17% more than the year before. Own production fully covers domestic needs, making it possible to ship this product abroad.

Ukraine has been exporting roughly 20 KMT a season since three years ago, UkrAgroConsult reports.

The EU is the top importer of kidney beans from Ukraine, absorbing 69% of their exports. Turkey, the second biggest buyer, slashed import by 76% from the same time last year. The main reason for lowered demand from the traditional importers is high world price of kidney beans.

Russian chickpeas. Russian chickpea plantings were significantly reduced in 2020 (from 579 Th ha to 352 Th ha) that entailed a 42% slump in production from MY 2019/20.

The fall in production led to a sharp decline in exports (-45% y-o-y), with India being the only buyer to step up purchases (+3% y-o-y).

Price of Russian chickpeas is up 71% y-o-y due to stronger demand from their major buyer – Pakistan, but competition there is considerably keener this season as Australia expands its presence.

We believe the surge in Black Sea chickpea prices will contribute to a 2021 acreage expansion in Russia.
