Poland’s potato imports fall nearly 41% in volume and 46% in value
Poland reduced its potato imports by 40.5% year-on-year in January–August 2026 to 105.84 thsd tons, compared with 177.97 thsd tons in the same period of 2025. According to preliminary data from Statistics Poland (GUS), import volumes declined by more than 72 thsd tons. Meanwhile, the value of imported potatoes fell even more sharply, by 45.8%, from PLN 293.43 mln to PLN 159.04 mln. Current import volumes were also lower than those recorded during the corresponding periods of 2023 and 2024.
The largest shipments of imported potatoes to the Polish market were recorded in the spring months. Imports reached 16.92 thsd tons in March, increased to 20.15 thsd tons in April and peaked at 27.85 thsd tons in May. May alone accounted for more than a quarter of total imports during the eight-month period. In June, purchases declined slightly to 24.78 thsd tons, followed by a sharp reduction in shipments.
In July, Poland’s potato imports fell by 67.5% compared with June to 8.05 thsd tons. The main reason was an increase in supplies from domestic producers. The sharpest decline occurred in August, when the country imported just 875.9 tons of potatoes, down 89% from July and 96.9% below the May peak. The value of August shipments amounted to approximately PLN 1.53 mln, compared with PLN 7.94 mln a month earlier.
Germany remained Poland’s largest potato supplier, exporting 50.23 thsd tons during January–August and accounting for approximately 47.5% of total Polish imports. France ranked second with 12.87 thsd tons, followed by Greece with 9.66 thsd tons, the Netherlands with 6.93 thsd tons and Egypt with 6.10 thsd tons. Cyprus supplied another 5.93 thsd tons. Germany’s dominance became even more pronounced in August, when it accounted for 647.6 tons out of total imports of 875.9 tons.
