Poland is second after the leader in European Union maize exports

In the 2024/25 season, Polish exporters sent 617,500 tonnes of maize outside the European Union, which is 13% more than a year earlier (548,400 tonnes). As a result, Poland is already responsible for 26 percent of EU exports of this grain and ranks second in the ranking of member states.
The growth dynamics and the high pace of shipments, which have been maintained for most of the season, confirm the permanent improvement of Poland’s position on global markets.
The European market is dominated by three countries. Romania remains the leader, accounting for more than half of the export volume, Poland strengthened its position as the runner-up, and France takes third place.
EU export ranking (2024/25 season):
- Romania — 51 percent share (leader also in wheat exports),
- Poland — 26 percent share,
- France — 16 percent share.
Together, these three countries generate as much as 94 percent of all maize exports from the European Union.
Despite the succes of Poland and other member states, the European Union is not one of the global powers in the export of maize. The vast majority of the harvest goes to the internal market, and the shortages are supplemented by imports. According to FAO estimates, EU corn imports will amount to 19.5 million tonnes in the current season.
Brazil, the USA and Argentina are the world leaders , whose exports are many times larger than those of the EU.
Poland is becoming an export power within the European Union. If the positive trend continues, our country in coming years can realistically fight for the leading position.
What high sales to non-EU markets mean for Polish producers :
- more favourable sales prices due to growing demand,
- promotion of Polish maize on global markets,
- the possibility of concluding long-term export contracts.
However, in order to overtake Romania, not only will high yields be needed, but also efficient logistics and further investments in our export infrastructure.
