Poland hopes for stabilization of fertilizer market after increase in duties on Russian products

The European Parliament’s decision on fertilizer duties will help protect Polish producers from the influx of cheap imports from Russia and Belarus, and will also improve the situation in the entire industry. This was stated by Poland’s Minister of State Assets Jakub Jaworowski, writes Farmer.pl.
“The gradual increase in fertilizer duties from Russia and Belarus is an important step towards increasing food security throughout the European Union and real support for Polish chemical companies. Together with members of the government, we have been pushing for these decisions at various levels of the EU. I have personally spoken to representatives of the European Parliament and other member states on many occasions, emphasizing the need for decisive action,” the minister said in a post on social networks.
Imports of fertilizers from Russia to the EU have increased significantly in recent years, which creates a problem for European producers, who are having increasing difficulty competing with this country. Gas, which is much cheaper in Russia, is used to produce fertilizers. In addition, the European fertilizer sector is less competitive due to the costs associated with the EU climate policy – the emissions trading system.
In January-February 2025, Poland imported almost 400 thousand tons of mineral fertilizers from Russia, which is 64.2% more than in the same period last year. Thus, Russia became the largest supplier of fertilizers to Poland.
As a reminder, from July 1, 2025, new tariffs on fertilizers from Russia and Belarus will come into effect in the EU. The tariffs will be introduced on a progressive scale – up to 430 euros per ton by 2028. The main goal is to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian fertilizers, the share of which today exceeds 35%.
