Poland has the largest outbreak of bird flu: 1.5 mln chickens destroyed
Poland has recorded one of the largest outbreaks of bird flu in the last two years.
In the Greater Poland Voivodeship, almost 1.5 million laying hens were destroyed due to the disease, the country’s Main Veterinary Inspectorate reported.
This is the 19th case of bird flu in Poland since the beginning of the year and the ninth in the Greater Poland region. At the same time, the virus is also actively spreading in the Lublin Voivodeship.
According to the veterinary service, as of January 13, 2026, about 1.3 million poultry were kept in infected enterprises, most of which were liquidated, which caused significant losses for farmers.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, a special investigative team was sent to the Greater Poland Voivodeship to analyze possible links between the affected farms and assist local veterinary services in combating the spread of the disease.
In 2025, 127 outbreaks of avian influenza were registered in Poland, leading to the loss of more than 10 million poultry.
