Parana Soybean Harvest is 25% Complete

Farmers in the state of Parana in southern Brazil had harvested 25% of their 2023/24 soybeans as of earlier this week. This represented an advance of 6% for the week and is the fastest harvest pace since 2019 when 33% of soybeans had been harvested according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). Last year at this time, 2% of the soybeans had been harvested.

The harvest pace is accelerated this year due to hot and dry weather during December and early January that shortened the soybean growth cycle. Deral is estimating the 2023/24 soybean production in Parana at 19.2 million tons, which is down 14% from the 22 million tons produced in 2022/23. The hot and dry conditions during December and early January impacted the early maturing soybeans that were filling pods at the time.

As the soybeans are harvested, farmers in Parana are planting their safrinha corn. Deral reported that 32% of the safrinha corn had been planted as of earlier this week, which represents an advance of 10% for the week. This is the second fastest planting pace since 2019 when 47% of the safrinha corn had been planted. Parana is the second largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil after Mato Grosso.
