Pakistani farmers sound the alarm over wheat crisis

Farmers in Pakistan are once again facing mounting concerns during the wheat harvesting season. Smallholder producers, in particular, fear they will be unable to recover their costs, as uncertainty over fair pricing continues to overshadow the crop that feeds millions across the country.

One of the most pressing issues this year is the shortage of threshers, caused by disruptions in manufacturing due to power outages and restricted business hours during peak harvesting time. This has led to delays in processing the crop, increasing the risk of grain losses from shattering and exposure to untimely rains, which can significantly reduce quality and profits.

Pricing policies have also failed to reassure farmers. The delayed announcement of the official support price has left many growers with little choice but to sell their wheat to middlemen at lower rates. At the same time, rising input costs — including fertilizers and fuel — have further squeezed already thin margins, intensifying fears of financial losses.

Weather-related challenges have compounded the crisis. Recent rains and hailstorms have already damaged crops in several regions, raising concerns about overall production levels. Despite the growing impact of climate change, the official response remains largely reactive rather than preventive.

Experts warn that the lack of a clear procurement strategy and consistent agricultural policy is putting additional strain on the sector. If authorities fail to address farmers’ concerns over equipment shortages and fair pricing, the consequences could extend beyond agriculture, threatening the country’s food security and economic stability amid rising energy costs.
