Pakistan is hooked on Russian grain

Russia has become the main supplier of grain to Pakistan, according to Russian media. Thus, in March, wheat exports from Russia amounted to almost half a million tons, and the share in imports reached 70%. In 2022, the share of Russia was 24.6%.
In 2023, wheat supplies from Russia to Pakistan increased 5.5 times to 1.6 million tons, the value amounted to $568.3 million. In the first quarter of this year, the volume was already almost two-thirds of last year’s figure and reached 1 million tons worth $296 million.
In March, sales reached a record 478 thousand tons worth $139 million, and the share of Pakistani imports reached 70.5%.
Pakistan paid for Russian grain imports in the first quarter in half in UAE dirhams and dollars. For the first time, dirhams were used to pay for this commodity in November 2023.
