Pace of soybean sowing in Argentina has increased
After rains over the weekend in parts of Argentina’s agricultural heartland, farmers will be able to maintain the fast pace of soybean planting this season, the Rosario Grain Exchange said on Monday.
Now that dry weather is expected in the next few days, farmers will be able to continue planting an expected 17.7 million hectares (43.7 million acres) of soybean this season, the exchange said.
“We have a week of high temperatures ahead. We are seeing very significant (planting) activity, with almost 850,000 hectares planted in the last seven days,” Christian Rousseau, head of agricultural valuations at the exchange, said in an audio broadcast. “So as soon as the conditions are right, sowing will continue very actively,” he added.
A separate exchange, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, said last week that about 8% of the estimated soybean area for this season has already been planted. This exchange publishes weekly estimates and puts the total area at a slightly higher level of 18.6 million hectares (46 million acres).
Argentina is the world’s leading exporter of soybean oil and meal. According to the Rosario exchange, soybean production this season is expected to be between 52 million and 53 million metric tons.
