Official sales of GM seeds in Ukraine may be allowed in 2030
The current draft law on new genomic techniques in the EU means that some GMOs will be defined as non-GMOs and will be allowed for use only with the appropriate seed labeling. This is the future that awaits Ukraine.
This was stated by Myroslav Pariy, co-founder and director of the company «Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Plant Breeding», during the Soy Discussion Club «The Non-GM Law: What Should Agricultural Producers Prepare For?».
«After a GMO is entered into the register, it will be necessary to register the varieties containing these GMOs. This stage may become available in 2029. Accordingly, in 2030, official sales of seeds of GM varieties will start in Ukraine. New genomic techniques, in particular NGT-1 seeds, will not undergo a risk assessment procedure. They will only be entered into a special register upon the manufacturer’s application. The only requirement will be seed labeling. Most European companies are working very actively in this area in order to create NGT-1 GMOs and avoid spending money on the registration of classical GMOs. There will also be NGT-2 — something that can be created through classical breeding, but this process takes a very long time», Myroslav Pariy said.
In addition, he noted that the EU had announced the simplification of GMO registration and authorization for their release into the environment.
