October rains improve soil moisture even in drought-affected regions of Ukraine
Agrometeorological conditions in October 2026 were generally favorable for the early development of winter crops in Ukraine. Rainfall across the country replenished available soil moisture reserves in nearly all soil layers and supported uniform emergence of winter crops in many fields, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
As of October 31, available soil moisture reserves were assessed as sufficient or optimal across most planted areas. Significant improvements in moisture availability were recorded even in parts of Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, as well as some areas of Vinnytsia and Lviv regions, where prolonged drought conditions had persisted. Combined with warm weather, October rainfall created favorable conditions for seed germination and the early growth of winter crops.
Between October 21 and 31, average daily air temperatures fell below +10°C across most of Ukraine, approximately 2–3 weeks later than the long-term average. However, in most western regions and some areas of Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia regions, this transition occurred earlier, on October 12–13, close to the usual timing or around 1–1.5 weeks later than normal.
Despite sufficient warmth and improved soil moisture conditions, winter crop development in most regions lagged 2–3 weeks behind the long-term average. The main reasons were the preceding prolonged drought and delayed sowing, which left a significant share of crops at earlier development stages during the autumn growing season.
By the end of October, winter crops in most fields were at the emergence or third-leaf stage, while grain germination was still underway in late-sown fields. Tillering had begun in some areas, but widespread tillering was observed only in isolated districts where crops had been sown in September. Overall, agrometeorologists assessed winter crop conditions as good or satisfactory, with some fields rated excellent.
