North Korea sees decline in wheat and barley cultivation areas

Satellite analysis shows that in spring 2026, wheat and barley cultivation areas in North Korea declined overall compared to the same period last year. Despite isolated growth in parts of Pyongyang, the country recorded a net decrease in total planted acreage.

The most significant declines were observed in South Hwanghae and South Pyongan provinces — traditional agricultural hubs of the DPRK — where grain cultivation areas fell by approximately 20–25%.

At the same time, the capital region, particularly Hyongjesan district in Pyongyang, recorded an increase in cultivated land. Analysts attribute this growth to better access to fertilizers, fuel supplies, and a relatively more developed irrigation infrastructure.

The stark regional contrast highlights the uneven development of the country’s agricultural sector, where local conditions and state-controlled resource allocation play a role as significant as weather-related factors.

Overall, the total area under spring grain cultivation across the analyzed regions declined by about 8%, casting doubt on the stability of previous expansion efforts for wheat and barley production.

Amid declining domestic output, North Korea has traditionally relied on imports and humanitarian channels to cover grain shortages. The main external suppliers of grain are China and Russia, although shipments are often irregular and politically influenced. The country also secures limited volumes through commercial purchases on global markets and international humanitarian assistance.
