NATO strengthens Black Sea presence following series of attacks on ships
NATO will deploy additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, and drones to the Black Sea.
This was reported by Reuters, citing statements from NATO officials.
The decision was made by NATO’s principal decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council, during a meeting in Brussels attended by ambassadors from all 32 member states, following a series of deadly drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea.
According to NATO military spokesperson US Army Colonel Martin L. O’Donnell, in addition to aircraft, drones, and radar systems, alliance members have already deployed or plan to deploy reconnaissance teams and specialists to conduct forensic analysis of explosives in the region.
At least five cargo ships have been struck near the coast of Romania and neighboring NATO member Bulgaria over the past 10 days, with at least 23 sailors reported missing or dead.
NATO’s chief spokesperson Allison Hart said the alliance had already strengthened its eastern flank defenses, including through counter-drone capabilities.
“We will continue to stand united, maintain our readiness and ability to counter any threat, and ensure the security of our one billion people,” Hart wrote on X.
