Morocco to create strategic grain reserve for 6 months

Morocco plans to establish a strategic buffer stock of grain sufficient to cover six months of national consumption. This was announced by Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari during a live address to parliament. The initiative aims to strengthen food security amid climate instability and fluctuations in global prices.

According to the minister, this is an “important sovereign decision” that will help protect the country from weather-related risks and volatility in international markets. The Moroccan government expects to harvest around 9 million tons of cereals this year, supported by favorable weather conditions after several years of drought. The new approach prioritizes domestic production.

Local grain processing operators will be required to purchase between 2 and 3 mln tons of grain from the domestic harvest. This will take place during a suspension of soft wheat imports in June and July. The measure is intended to ensure stable demand for Moroccan farmers’ output.

The government notes that the goal is not only to build up reserves but also to guarantee fair income for agricultural producers. In this way, authorities aim to strengthen the domestic market and reduce dependence on external supplies during critical periods.

The initiative is part of Morocco’s long-term strategy to enhance food independence. Earlier reports indicated plans to create a strategic wheat reserve amid regional conflicts and global supply chain risks.
