Moldovan government approves sale of Giurgiuleşti port to Romania

The Moldovan government has supported Romania’s bid to acquire the operator of the Giurgiuleşti International Free Port. The Council for Reviewing Investments of National Security Importance has approved the request of the Romanian state-owned company “Sea Ports Authority” to acquire 100% of the capital of Danube Logistics SRL, which currently operates the port.
The Romanian side plans to invest over 24 million euros in the development of the Giurgiuleşti port. The modernization plan includes the construction of new terminals with ramps and container yards, the renewal of the railway infrastructure, the expansion of warehouses, as well as the introduction of digital technologies and solutions for energy efficiency and the ecological transition.
The acquisition of the Moldovan port operator is part of Romania’s strategy to expand the port of Constanta, which aims to become a leading logistics hub in Central and Southeastern Europe. According to the Romanian authorities, control over Giurgiuleşti will contribute to the strengthening of trade flows and the strengthening of Constanta’s position in the regional market. The port of Giurgiuleşti, located on the Danube, is a key facility for Moldova, providing access to international markets, in particular for the export of grain and other goods.
Details of the agreement, including specific steps and deadlines for its implementation, remain undisclosed. Giurgiuleşti has two port facilities: the International Free Port, operated by Danube Logistics with the participation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the state-owned port, owned by the Moldovan government. The sale of the private port operator will not affect the state-owned facility, but could change the dynamics of management and investment in the region.
