Moldovan farmers demand to extend restrictions on Ukrainian imports of grain and sunseed for the next year

Moldovan farmers’ associations are demanding that the restrictions on grain supplies from Ukraine, which expire on December 31 this year, be extended until 2025.
“It is important to maintain the import licensing regime to protect the agricultural sector. Last year, we witnessed the disastrous effect that the liberalization of grain imports from Ukraine had on Moldovan farmers, who are now struggling to survive,” the Moldovan farmers’ request says.
As a reminder, in July 2024, the Moldovan parliament introduced a special regime for imports of wheat, corn and sunseed, which can currently be supplied to the country only with a license. This was done at the request of farmers’ associations, which threatened to resume protests if the authorities did not protect local producers following the example of Eastern European countries.
