Moldova restores rail link to Giurgiulesti port
Moldova’s state railway operator has resumed a key section of the Cahul–Giurgiulesti line, which provides access to the strategic Giurgiulesti port. In late April, the company conducted test runs on the restored segment near the village of Valeni.
The project involved reconstructing a damaged section of approximately 400 meters, part of a critical route connecting to the Giurgiulesti International Free Port. The works were financed by the Moldovan government and aimed at restoring stable rail connectivity.
The section was severely damaged in 2022 due to soil subsidence and erosion, which led to a suspension of rail traffic. During the reconstruction, engineers stabilized the embankment using deep piles, installed drainage systems, and fully upgraded the track infrastructure, including rails, sleepers, and ballast.
The reopening of this route is expected to support higher volumes of grain and agricultural cargo transport, improve export logistics, and strengthen Moldova’s transit potential, particularly as part of alternative regional trade corridors.
