Modi urges India to cut vegetable oil imports amid global tensions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on citizens to reduce their consumption of vegetable oils and support domestic production, stressing that such a shift could help lower the country’s dependence on imports. His remarks come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, which are disrupting global supply chains.
The Prime Minister noted that even a small reduction in oil use at the household level could have a significant economic impact for the country. According to him, this would represent a “contribution to patriotism,” as it would help reduce India’s foreign exchange spending on imported food products.
Modi also emphasized the importance of promoting natural and sustainable farming practices. He urged farmers to gradually adopt more environmentally friendly production methods that could reduce reliance on expensive imported inputs and strengthen the long-term resilience of the agricultural sector.
The government initiative is also linked to efforts to strengthen food security in India amid volatility in global markets. In particular, the conflict involving Iran has already affected logistics and the prices of agricultural commodities, including vegetable oils.
Analysts say such statements could reinforce domestic support programs for farmers and encourage higher oilseed production within the country. However, the effectiveness of these measures will depend on how quickly farmers are able to adapt to the proposed changes.
