Mexico to Reach White Corn Self-Sufficiency in 2025

Mexico is on track to achieve white corn self-sufficiency in 2025, with national availability projected to exceed 2Mt. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), 18.5Mt of white corn were harvested nationwide during the 2024 spring–summer cycle. Additionally, Sinaloa, one of the country’s leading corn-producing states, is expected to contribute 2.2Mt. The state has already completed 85% of the harvest across 214,750ha, with an average yield of 10.28t/ha.

These results are consistent with earlier estimates from the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP), which projected an average yield of 10.5t/ha for the region.

SADER stated that the current production levels guarantee domestic supply and align with national goals under President Sheinbaum’s Mexico Plan, which aims to strengthen food sovereignty and achieve food self-sufficiency. The agency emphasized its commitment to ensuring the supply of staple foods for Mexican households, citing the current production outlook as a foundation for achieving long-term food security goals.

At the global scale, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts total corn production for the 2025–2026 commercial cycle to reach 1.265 billion t, a 3.9% increase from the previous cycle. The top producers are projected to be the United States with 401.8Mt, Brazil with 131Mt, and Argentina with 53Mt.
