Beef exports from Mercosur countries have been spared from the latest U.S. trade measures, allowing exporters to maintain access to one of the world’s most important markets. While several other industries were affected by new tariffs, beef was once again excluded from the restrictions.

The United States first imposed a 25% tariff on a range of Brazilian products, including footwear, apparel and machinery, but beef was specifically exempted. Later, the administration of President Donald Trump introduced an additional 10% tariff on imports from 60 countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. Beef, however, remained outside the scope of the new measures.

Market analysts say the exemption reflects the importance of maintaining stable beef supplies for the U.S. market. With domestic production unable to fully meet demand, the United States continues to rely on imports to help contain consumer prices, making beef a strategically important commodity.

Despite favorable access to the U.S. market, Mercosur exporters face challenges elsewhere. Brazil has already exhausted its annual beef export quota to China, while the European Union has announced that imports of Brazilian beef, poultry, honey and other animal products will be banned from September 3 over concerns about the country’s controls on antimicrobial use.

The latest developments highlight the growing importance of the U.S. market for Mercosur beef exporters. Although U.S. cattle producers continue to push for tighter import restrictions, the administration has so far prioritized maintaining adequate meat supplies to limit inflationary pressure in the domestic market.
