Market overestimated prospects for Russian wheat export recovery as prices rise again
Global wheat prices rebounded on November 5 after falling to a near four-month low the previous day. Futures climbed to $6 per bushel amid a deteriorating outlook for Russian exports and growing concerns over the stability of global supplies. The market had previously priced in expectations of a recovery in Black Sea grain trade, but persistent logistical restrictions are now forcing traders to reassess those assumptions.
Russian agricultural consultancy IKAR lowered its forecast for Russia’s wheat exports in the 2026/27 marketing year by 2.5 mln tons, from 42 mln to 39.5 mln tons. At the same time, its estimate for total Russian grain exports was reduced from 52.8 mln to 49.5 mln tons. The downward revisions highlight growing risks to export shipments that the market had previously largely underestimated.
Disruptions along key Black Sea logistics routes remain the main challenge. Due to shipping restrictions, Russian exporters are increasingly redirecting grain cargoes to rail transport and Baltic ports. However, the capacity of these alternative routes is approaching its limits, restricting their ability to compensate for reduced shipments through traditional export corridors.
In late October, wheat prices fell below $6 per bushel as market participants anticipated diplomatic progress and a possible restoration of full-scale grain trade in the Black Sea. These expectations put additional pressure on futures despite the continued practical restrictions on exports. The latest price recovery suggests that the market is gradually reassessing its earlier risk estimates, although it is still too early to speak of a sustained upward trend.
