Malaysia increases palm oil exports to India by 40%

Malaysia is increasing palm oil shipments to India and plans to expand exports of higher-value products. India has already imported more than 2.26 mln tons of Malaysian palm oil, up 40% compared with the same period in 2025.

This volume accounts for almost 18% of Malaysia’s total palm oil production. At the same time, the country aims to expand shipments to India beyond crude palm oil to include oleochemicals, specialty fats, food ingredients and personal-care products.

India remains one of Malaysia’s key export markets and relies on imports to meet around two-thirds of its vegetable oil needs. The country’s total vegetable oil imports, including soybean and sunflower oil, exceeded 11.2 mln tons through August.

Malaysia produced 12.6 mln tons of palm oil in the first eight months of 2026, while full-year production is forecast at around 19.7 mln tons. Exports increased by 806 thsd tons, or 8.4%, over the same period.

Malaysia expects palm oil exports to reach around 16 mln tons in 2026. For 2027, the government expects production and exports to remain broadly stable despite higher freight, energy and insurance costs.
