Lebanon aims to become an alternative garlic supplier to Europe
Lebanese garlic growers are looking to establish themselves in the European market as an alternative supply origin following a successful first commercial season in the UK. Italy and Northern European countries are among the next target markets.
Lebanese garlic is grown using the same varieties as in Spain, including European White, Spring Violet and Murado. Producers are focusing on consistent quality and large sizes, with around 40% of the crop reaching 70+ sizing.
Garlic production currently covers around 126 hectares, with annual output at about 2 thsd tons. The area is expected to expand to 150 hectares in the near future. The supply season runs from late May through March.
At the same time, Lebanon is seeking to expand carrot exports to West and Central Africa. Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Gabon are among the main target markets, where demand has strengthened amid irregular supplies from Morocco.
The main obstacle to further carrot export growth is not logistics but market access and the development of a stable customer base. Over the past two years, Lebanese exporters have shipped around 130 containers of carrots to African markets.
