Kenya may start importing corn following its worst harvest in seven years

The Kenyan government is considering allowing duty-free imports of 3 mln tons of white corn following a sharp decline in domestic production. The Cereal Millers Association (CMA) has proposed opening a nine-month duty-free import window to stabilize grain supplies and corn flour prices.

The need for higher imports is linked to drought and unfavorable weather conditions that have significantly worsened the corn harvest outlook. According to the industry association, the country is facing its steepest production decline in seven years, including in key grain-producing regions.

The proposed nine-month duty-free import period would allow processors to sign long-term contracts and source grain from a wider range of international markets. Zambia and Tanzania are among the potential suppliers, although high transportation costs from Zambia and the risk of Tanzania restricting exports are prompting importers to consider other origins as well.

Separately, the government plans to allow imports of 360 thsd tons of yellow corn for animal feed production. Its use by the livestock sector is expected to reduce demand for white corn and free up more food-grade grain for domestic consumption.

Kenyan authorities plan to maintain quality requirements for imported grain, particularly regarding moisture levels and aflatoxin contamination. At the same time, the government intends to speed up laboratory testing and customs procedures at the border to reduce import costs and ensure faster supplies of corn to the domestic market.
