Kazakhstan. A new attempt to grow soybeans in the Aral Sea region

A soybean growing project is being launched for a second time in Kyzylorda region, Kazakhstan, within the framework of introducing new crops, reports UkrAgroConsult.

This year, three farms cultivated soybeans as a trial on a total area of 48 ha. They harvested 91 MT with an average yield of 2.0–2.2 MT/ha.

Soybean sales are aimed at other regions of Kazakhstan and at China.

The project initiators and participants claim that soybean growing is promising and profitable because of low production costs and high margin of this crop (soybeans are almost 2.5 times cheaper to cultivate than rice). In addition, soybeans do not require much irrigation, whereas rice growers in the region face water shortage.
