Italy expands rapeseed acreage and develops organic production segment

Italy continues to increase its rapeseed acreage as farmers increasingly view the crop as a profitable alternative to traditional crops. At the same time, interest in organic rapeseed production is growing, creating new opportunities for both producers and the processing industry.

One of the key drivers behind the crop’s expansion is Italian company Cereal Docks, which supports growers throughout the entire value chain, from crop planning to industrial processing. The company offers farmers guaranteed marketing channels, price risk management tools, links to MATIF quotations, and agronomic support, helping producers make more confident production and marketing decisions.

Market fundamentals are also supporting interest in rapeseed. The European Union produces more than 20 million tonnes of rapeseed annually, while countries such as France, Germany, and Poland have long considered it a strategic crop. In Italy, rapeseed acreage has surpassed 30,000 hectares and continues to expand thanks to improved hybrid genetics and steady demand for rapeseed oil and protein meal from the food and livestock sectors.

Beyond its economic potential, rapeseed provides significant agronomic benefits. The crop helps improve soil structure through its deep root system, fits well into crop rotations, and can effectively complement soybeans as a second crop. In many parts of Italy, rapeseed is also being promoted as an alternative to durum wheat, helping farmers diversify production and reduce commercial risks.
