Iran open to buying US agricultural products at acceptable prices and quality
Iran sees no obstacles to purchasing U.S. goods, including wheat, but has no obligation to direct unfrozen funds exclusively toward such purchases. This was stated by the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Abdolnaser Hemmati, commenting on agreements between Tehran and Washington.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said that unfrozen Iranian assets would be used to purchase food and medical goods of U.S. origin through a special escrow account controlled by the United States. However, Hemmati stressed that the signed documents contain no provisions requiring mandatory purchases exclusively from the U.S.
According to the Iranian central bank chief, Tehran is willing to consider importing American products if their price and quality meet the country’s needs. This includes basic food commodities such as wheat. He also expressed hope that the first shipment of goods purchased with unfrozen funds will arrive in Iran soon.
Iran’s soybean imports in the 2025/26 season were 2.15 million tons, and have ranged from 1.55 million to 2.8 million tons over the past decade. Corn imports in the same period were 9.5 million tons, and have ranged from 6.8 to 9.8 million tons over the past decade.
It is recalled that Iran and the United States signed a memorandum on June 18 via indirect talks, aimed at ending the military conflict that began in late February. The document provides for a phased lifting of the naval blockade, the restoration of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and the start of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. In return for compliance, Tehran expects a gradual easing of international sanctions.
