Iran has introduced a new mechanism to control transit through the Strait of Hormuz
After US President Donald Trump launched the “Project Freedom” initiative to ensure the passage of merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran announced the creation of its own transit control mechanism in this strategic maritime corridor. This is reported by the Iranian pro-government Press TV channel.
Tehran is effectively introducing additional rules for all ships planning to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the announced mechanism, all ships are required to notify the Iranian authorities in advance of their intention to pass through the strait. After that, they will receive electronic instructions with transit rules and requirements.
Tehran emphasizes that ships must not only familiarize themselves with these requirements, but also obtain official permission before entering the waters of the Strait of Hormuz.
In fact, this means strengthening Iran’s control over one of the world’s key oil and gas supply routes.
Earlier, the Iranian military command threatened to attack American ships approaching the Strait of Hormuz. This was a reaction to the US launch of Operation Project Freedom, announced on May 4 by President Donald Trump.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), destroyers, more than 100 aircraft and about 15 thousand military personnel are planned to be involved in escorting ships in the region.
Washington said that the operation should guarantee safe shipping. Trump, in turn, spoke sharply against Tehran, declaring his readiness to take tough action if the mission is obstructed.
