International seed support will increase the sown area in Ukraine by 30%
Among the key needs of agricultural producers under martial law are provision of generators, seed material, access to financing and smooth exports. In particular, according to the assessment of the Ministry of Agricultural Policy, if there is international support with seed material, the total area of crops in Ukraine during spring field work may increase by 30%. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Markiyan Dmytrasevich, during the round table “Urgent needs of the Ukrainian agricultural sector for sustainability and recovery”, organized with the support of the European Union and the World Bank.
“We conducted a survey among farmers regarding the need for seeds. In fact, all farmers answered that they are ready to sow. And, if there is international support with seed material, the total area of crops can increase by 30%. That’s why we asked our partners for help. And there are already the first positive reviews, in particular from the FAO,” said Markiyan Dmytrasevich.
In addition, according to him, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy has appealed to all partner countries of Ukraine for assistance in purchasing generators for the agricultural sector. The need for them is 1125 units. So far, confirmation of the provision of 25 generators has been received from Germany. At the same time, the Ministry is negotiating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the FAO. “Everyone felt the consequences of the blackout. In the agricultural sector, animal husbandry and processing suffer the most. We are working to cover at least part of the need for 1,125 generators,” the Deputy Minister emphasized.
