Infrastructure Ministry wants to develop water transport in Ukraine more actively

The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine elaborates a bill on inland water transport to increase the potential of inland waterways.
“The bill provides that the sole enterprise will be responsible for the development and operation of strategic infrastructure of inland waterways, including shipping locks, navigation equipment, river information systems and fairway services. To fulfill all these functions, a stable and sufficient funding scheme will be established,” the Ministry’s press service reports.
According to Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Krykliy, the economic effect of the use of inland water transport will compensate for government spending on the maintenance and reconstruction of river infrastructure.
“Our goal is to reduce the load on Ukrainian roads, to direct part of the cargo to inland waterways. Based on European experience and remarks of most representatives of business structures, we will propose additional incentives for inland water transport, in particular, we consider it appropriate to abandon the introduction of river charges,” he said.
