Indonesia’s palm oil exports to the EU will increase by 20%
Indonesia’s palm oil exports to the European Union are projected to increase in 2026, spurred by a bilateral trade agreement and the EU’s renewed postponement of an anti-deforestation law, the head of the Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (GAPKI) told Reuters on Wednesday.
According to him, Indonesia’s palm oil exports to the EU could grow to approximately 4 million tonnes in 2026, up from a projected 3.3 million tonnes this year, representing a more than 20% increase. Jakarta expects palm oil sales to the EU to double within five years.
The previous day, it was announced that the EU had reached a trade deal with Indonesia, removing 98% of trade barriers and will postpone the anti-deforestation law until next year. The delay was justified by the production sector’s unpreparedness for logistical and regulatory changes. The law was due to come into force on December 30 and would have required operators selling commodities such as soy, beef and butter on EU markets to provide evidence that their products do not cause deforestation.
