Indonesian poultry farmers urge cautious implementation of new soybean meal purchasing policy
Indonesia’s poultry sector has advocated for a phased and measured implementation of the new government soybean meal (SBM) procurement policy, which requires mandatory procurement through the state-owned company Berdikari.
The Indonesian Poultry Farmers Association (Gopan) emphasized that the initiative’s implementation must take into account supply chain readiness, pricing conditions, and the efficiency of the logistics and distribution system.
Gopan Secretary General Sugeng Wahyudi confirmed that market participants had previously requested a delay in the originally planned policy launch from March to avoid potential supply disruptions.
“The plan was to implement it in March, but market participants proposed a delay to ensure there are no bottlenecks after the launch,” he noted.
While the initiative may strengthen government control over feed supply chains, its effectiveness will directly depend on Berdikari’s ability to ensure competitive prices for SBM.
According to industry estimates, SBM accounts for approximately 20-22% of the poultry feed mix. Therefore, any increase in the price of this component will directly impact production costs.
Gopan warns that rising feed prices could lead to higher prices for chicken meat and eggs, which will ultimately impact both consumers and the overall balance of the domestic food market.
