Indonesia increases purchases of US wheat

Indonesian flour millers have committed to increasing purchases of U.S. wheat under a long-term agreement with U.S. Wheat Associates (USW), strengthening trade ties between the two countries and expanding the U.S. share in one of the world’s largest wheat-importing markets.

The commitment stems from a memorandum of understanding signed in July 2025 between USW and the Indonesian Flour Mills Association (APTINDO). Under the agreement, Indonesian millers pledged to purchase at least 800,000 metric tons of U.S. milling wheat in 2025 and raise annual purchases to 1 million metric tons from 2026 through 2030, equivalent to about $250 million per year.

To support the agreement, USW organized a series of technical and educational programs for Indonesian milling companies, including trade missions, grain procurement training courses, milling workshops and crop quality seminars. The initiatives were designed to demonstrate the performance and value of different classes of U.S. wheat.

According to USW, Indonesia imported 832,588 metric tons of U.S. wheat between July and December 2025, exceeding the first-year target set under the memorandum. The purchases included Hard Red Spring, Hard Red Winter, Soft White and Soft Red Winter wheat.

Indonesia is consistently among the world’s top three wheat importers. If the agreement is fully implemented, U.S. wheat growers are expected to supply more than 10% of the country’s growing wheat-based food sector over the next five years.
