India’s wheat production estimated to hit record high of 115.3 million metric tonnes in 2024-25

India’s wheat production is estimated to reach a record level of 115.3 million metric tonnes during 2024-25, which is about 2 per cent higher compared to the 113.3 million tonnes produced during 2023-24, showed the Second Advance Estimates of production of major crops released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare on Monday.
Wheat production figures stood at 110.05 million tonnes in 2022-23 and 107.7 million tonnes in 2021-22. The estimates of record wheat output are significant as the government has set a target of procurement of 31 million tonnes of wheat during the upcoming rabi marketing season (2025-26).
The estimates (only Kharif and Rabi) for the year 2024-25 showed that the production of rapeseed and mustard is estimated to be 12.9 million tonnes, which is lower compared to the 13.26 million tonnes recorded the previous year.
In the current year (2024-25), the government has procured 26.6 million tonnes of wheat against a target of 30-32 million tonnes. At the beginning of March, the wheat stock in the central pool was 14.41 million tonnes, which is well above the April 1 buffer norm of 7.46 million tonnes.
The government has fixed the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of wheat at Rs 2,425 per quintal for the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2025-26, which is Rs 150 per quintal or 6.59 per cent higher compared to the price of Rs 2,275 during RMS 2024-25.
Wheat is the second largest crop after paddy in terms of area coverage. In 2023-24, the area under wheat stood at 318.33 lakh hectares, while the production is estimated at 113.92 million tonnes. Uttar Pradesh is the top wheat-producing state in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The estimates of record wheat production are significant as wheat prices have increased sharply in recent years. The Consumer Price Index-based retail inflation of wheat has been rising since February last year. The retail inflation in wheat reached 8.8 per cent in January 2025.
Further development of the grain sector in the Black Sea and Danube region will be discussed at the 23 International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN.KYIV on April 24 in Kyiv.
